Working together to develop innovative ways to observe and measure ocean processes

Because the ocean and ocean life are so fundamental to our weather and climate systems, Eastman Foundation supports the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in developing innovative ways to observe and measure ocean processes. These new instruments will allow scientists to collect data in new places and to deeper depths as they strive to understand the ocean's role in our climate and investigate how our changing planet affects ocean life and water systems.

Challenging students to apply cross-disciplinary learning to real world problems

Through a partnership with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Dobyns-Bennett High School in East Tennessee, students are being challenged to apply cross-disciplinary learnings to real world issues and problems in a unique capstone course focused on ocean processes. By interacting with some of the world’s top ocean scientists on active research projects, students are exposed to experiences that will give them a competitive advantage while continuing their education and entering the workforce.

Students Tackle Missions Modeled after Scenarios from the Ocean Workplace

A partnership between Eastman Foundation and STREAMWORKS Education is demonstrating that engaging students in the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) competition exposes them to exciting mentor and project-based programs that focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills, inspires innovation and fosters well-rounded life capabilities.

MATE combines robotics in an underwater environment and challenges K–12, community college, and university students from all over the world to design and build remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) to tackle missions modeled after scenarios from the ocean workplace.
