Meet the Challenge
The message is simple – we need more data to better understand our ocean. Anyone can make a difference. Start locally and make it personal.
No investment in ocean science is too small. If you have a voice of influence in your local school system, encourage more curriculum and programs in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM). These skills are crucial in problem-based learning and we need more emphasis on the importance of STEAM based careers. Find the closest oceanographic institution or university with a marine focus and get involved in a project. If you are in a position of leadership within a private enterprise – find a way to get involved. If you are a governmental leader, support the funding of ocean science and education.
To help facilitate, The Eastman Foundation invites you to The Great Blue Challenge. The Challenge is designed to spark and support programs, initiatives and events that promote and advance ocean science education.
Anyone can make a difference.
Why Eastman Foundation?
Eastman Foundation supports catalytic projects and initiatives focused on education, empowerment, economic development and the environment. With the right combination of resources, expertise and influence, we are able to help drive social innovation and continue doing Good for Good for people and the planet.
Because the ocean is so fundamental to our weather and climate systems, food web and global ecosystem, the Foundation is committed to supporting more partnerships and projects that will help us better understand the complexities of ocean science. The Great Blue Challenge is a direct result of this commitment and our ongoing desire to actively support environmental stewardship projects that will strengthen and improve quality of life for communities around the world.
We believe everyone can make a difference. Once again, Eastman Foundation is issuing its Great Blue Challenge to spark innovation and to find unique, creative and potentially catalytic project ideas to expedite ocean research. This is your chance to impact our changing world.
Participants complete the Great Blue Challenge Entry form, including a
250-word abstract of their project idea/proposal. All eligible
submissions will be reviewed and finalists will have the opportunity to
present their proposal in person or by videoconference to a panel of
experts. A budget for the requested funding must be submitted with your proposal. Eastman Foundation will provide grant funding to each of the
selected proposals through the non-profit, higher education, or
charitable organization affiliated with the successful entry. Successful participants may use the funding provided through the Challenge only to
further develop their idea or proposal and must submit a case study,
with photography, within one year of receipt of the grant. Submitted
case studies will be reviewed for inclusion in the Great Blue Challenge
case studies on GreatBlueChallenge.org.
The application form and process to submit your 250-word abstract will be available on GreatBlueChallenge.com between June 8, 2019 and July 31, 2019.
All applications must be submitted through the Great Blue Challenge online application system. We do not accept mailed or emailed applications. All application materials must be submitted in English.
